Mackenzie Thorpe - Born in 1956, Mackenzie is the eldest of seven children and spent his early years in a small terraced house in the town centre of Middlesborough. Spending his childhood playing in and around the streets and back alleys of terraced houses, derelict bombed out houses providing an exciting playground for a young Mackenzie and his Uncle Lawrence, three years older and a protective, guiding influence in Mackenzie's life. Both of Mackenzie's parents worked full time, his father a labourer and his mother an auxiliary nurse. Life at times was a struggle, but they were no different to that of most of the community. Mackenzie acknowledges mixed emotions about his childhood, he has not forgotten the isolation along with the loneliness and also the fear and darkness that was ever present, waiting it seemed in every shadow. He also remembers the strong feeling of community spirt, the strength of certain individual characters along with the warth and humour that flourished in the face of adversity. The vivid reality of these barely faded memories is apparent in some of Mackenzie's works. Mackenzie is one of those rare artists who are completley inseparable from their work, the need and compulsion to draw is obvious and has been from a early age. He would seek out and create using any raw materials he could find, when life for most people was about the struggle and survival. Whether he is depicting one of his notorious "square sheep", a group of burley men hunched over their dominoes in a smokey pub or a fantasy wild west shoot-out, his work speaks to you decisivley and compellingly as if he had slapped you on the shoulder. There is no pretension, no aloofness, just the urge to explore and communicate a deeply felt emotion.
